The Photo Story:
With her roots in Gospel music Mavis Staples is a powerhouse of music.

Mavis started her singing career with her family, the Staple Singers. From church appearances the family gospel band grew to fame as the musical voice of Martin Luther King, Jr’s civil rights movement of 1960’s America. Since starting her solo career in the late 60’s she has worked with Bob Dylan, Prince and Ry Cooder.

I had the chance to capture her on film on a perfect summer July day in Ottawa where she performed, outdoors, to a huge crowd.
